Police officers, emergency workers, and first responders risk their lives every day to protect our communities. No matter the time of day or how long it takes, they put in long hours and do whatever it takes to keep us safe. Their dedication is unmatched, and it’s not every day they receive recognition for their hard work.

After finishing a long and exhausting shift, four police officers in Louisiana decided to stop at their local Outback Steakhouse in Slidell to grab a meal. They just wanted a good dinner to wrap up their tiring day, but they had no idea they were about to be in for a big surprise.

The officers went to the Outback Steakhouse after work, according to Fox8, and everything seemed like a regular evening. Their meal was served without any issues, and there wasn’t anything out of the ordinary—until it was time for them to get their receipt.

“They’re the sweetest guys,” said Zoë Rao, a waitress at the Outback. “I enjoy waiting on them.” The officers were regulars, and the staff knew them well, which made this particular night special.

Outback manager Arline Wood, who has been with the company for 18 years, recognized the officers as soon as they walked in. She had seen them come in many times before, and she wanted to do something nice for them. So she and waitress Zoë came up with a plan.

When it was time for the officers to pay their $67 bill, they were shocked by what they saw. Instead of seeing a total to pay, they found a message that made them realize their meal was on the house. Along with the waived bill, there was a heartfelt note written on the receipt. At the top, it said, “Be safe!” Farther down, it read, “Thank y’all for y’all’s service! Enjoy y’all’s meal on us!”

“They care about the community. They care about everybody. They’re just great guys,” said Arline. “Our whole police force is great, and these guys that night, I went to Zoë and said, ‘Let’s take care of it.'”

The officers were moved by this unexpected gesture. To show their appreciation, they reportedly left a generous tip, grateful for the kindness shown by Arline and Zoë.

The Slidell Police Department later shared the receipt on their Facebook page, wanting to honor the two Outback employees for their generosity. The post quickly went viral, capturing the hearts of many people who saw it online.

However, Arline and Zoë never intended for their kind act to receive this much attention. They didn’t do it for recognition—they just wanted to show appreciation to the officers. When asked about the publicity, Arline admitted it had been overwhelming. “I got a phone call early in the morning, and I was like, ‘What are you talking about?'” Arline recalled. “People were calling me, then we saw it on Facebook, then it’s on this page and that one. We didn’t do it for this publicity, because Lord knows I don’t like all this publicity.”

Despite feeling overwhelmed, Arline and Zoë hope that the attention might have a positive outcome. They hope that their simple act of kindness will inspire others to do something similar to thank those who put their lives on the line every day for our safety.
